Director of PSM, Assistant Director Distance Degree Program, Clinical Associate Professor, SMB
Norah McCabe is a Clinical Associate Professor in the School of Molecular Biosciences (SMB) and is the Director of the PSM. She also serves as the Assistant Director of online Molecular Biosciences courses within SMB. Dr McCabe has been a faculty member at WSU for 15 years where she teaches courses in Genetics and Introductory Biology both online and on-campus. Her research interests are in human genetic diseases in particular the genetics of cancer cells. Dr McCabe’s educational background reflects her interest in interdisciplinary education as she has degrees in Pharmacology and Neurochemistry, with post-doctoral research in human genetic diseases. Dr McCabe has worked on the development of this new Master’s option, as she recognizes the demand of interdisciplinary training in workplace readiness and adaptability for current and future employees in the ever growing global workplace.
Director, School of Molecular Biosciences
Dr. Jones is the Director of the School of Molecular Biosciences at Washington State University. He is interested in the communication between cells and the environment which is essential for development, homeostasis and repair of tissues. His research in this area focuses on the interaction between epithelial cells and the extracellular matrix. His primary goal is to define how members of the laminin family of matrix molecules and their receptors regulate the behavior of skin and lung cells in normal and diseased tissues.
Professor and Associate Director, School of Molecular Biosciences
Dr. Kim is the Associate Director for the Graduate Studies
of the School of Molecular Biosciences. She was the Associate Director responsible for merging three-degree programs to one degree Graduate Program in Molecular Biosciences in 2007 and currently directs the Graduate Program in Molecular Biosciences. She also teaches undergraduate and graduate-level Cell Biology courses and a graduate course in Molecular Biology. Her research interests focus on delineating molecular mechanism of testis development in normal environment and after environmental toxin exposures. Her specific goal is to understand the function of retinoic acid receptors that mediate the critical action of retinoic acid in sperm development and how environmental contaminant phthalate plasticizers disturb this critical function in the testis. Additionally, her goal is to uncover the epigenetic mechanisms associated with multi-generational phenotypes in the phthalate-exposed groups.
Janet Ross Kendall
Director Emeritus, Center for Distance and Professional Education
Janet Ross Kendall is Director Emeritus of WSU Online at Washington State University. She was at WSU for 22 years, helping to coordinate WSU's distance learning degree and certificate programs and working with departments and colleges to develop additional programs and courses, including the PSM. Under Janet’s leadership, WSU Online was recognized as a national leader in the services available to students enrolled in WSU’s online programs. Before coming to WSU in 1987, Janet taught undergraduate and graduate reading courses at several universities in Canada and the U.S. She received her AB from Occidental College and her PhD in Educational Psychology from the University of Iowa.
Professor Emeritus, Ag Econ, and President of Belrose Inc.
Dr O’Rourke is a native of Northern Ireland. He has undergraduate degrees in Classics from Queens University, Belfast, and in Commerce from University College, Dublin and an M.A. and PhD in Agricultural Economics from the University of California, Davis. He served on the Agricultural Economics faculty of Washington State University from 1970 to 2000 and headed their international marketing program from 1985 to 2000 when he moved to the private sector to set up his own consulting company, Belrose, Inc., world fruit market analysts. That company publishes the monthly World Apple Report and other annual reviews of global fruit markets. Dr O’Rourke is the author of over 200 publications and a frequent invited speaker around the world on various aspects of food marketing and international trade. He and his wife have three grown children and three grandchildren.
Dr O'Rourke is a strong supporter of the PSM program because he believes that the future competitiveness of American business depends on having leaders with a strong training in both science and management.
Douglas R. Cobos
Director of Research and Development, Decagon Devices
Dr. Douglas Cobos is currently a Research Scientist and the Director of Research and Development at Decagon Devices located in Pullman, Washington. In 2003 he received his Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota in Soil Science/Climatology and in 1999 received a MS degree from Texas A&M University in Soil Science/Environmental Biophysics. Doug was the Lead Engineer for the Thermal and Electrical Conductivity Probe (TECP) that was designed by Decagon and flew to Mars aboard NASA's 2008 Phoenix Scout Lander. Doug is also an adjunct scientist at Washington State University in the Department of Crop and Soil Sciences, where he develops and teaches the course SOIL 414/514 and 415/515 Environmental Biophysics. He is a member of the American Geophysical Union, American Society of Agronomy and the Soil Science Society of America, and his current research is centered around instrumentation development for soil and plantsciences.
Assistant Professor, School of Politics, Philosophy, and Public Affairs, Co-director of ethics at Pullman Regional Hospital
Dr. Kabasenche earned his Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Tennessee in 2006. His research includes bioethics, ethics (virtue ethics, moral psychology), and the emergence of biomedical technologies and how it affects character and identity. He currently teaches courses in bioethics, biomedical ethics, and ethics of social science research.
Professor, College of Veterinary Medicine Integrative Physiology and Neuroscience
Dr. Harding is an internationally recognized expert on the neurochemistry of angiotensin peptides and their receptors and the development of peptide-based pharmaceuticals. Dr. Harding was an American Heart Association Established Investigator from 1985-1990, an NIH Fogarty fellow, and he has served on peer review committees for the NIH, NSF, and the American Heart Association. He has published more than 225 scientific articles and chapters on brain angiotensin, neurodegenerative disease, and cancer; and he reviews submitted manuscripts for 40+ scientific journals concerned with topics in the neurosciences, neurochemistry and biotechnology. In addition Dr. Harding has founded several biotechnology companies one of which has drug candidates in development for Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases. Dr. Harding received his Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Delaware in 1974 and completed his postdoctoral work in neurochemistry at the Roche Institute for Molecular Biology in Nutley, N.J. from 1974-76. He moved to WSU in 1976 and was promoted to Full Professor in 1985. His research includes understanding and developing pharmaceuticals to treat dementia, cancer, and deficits in wound healing.
CEO and Co-Founder of BowTie.io
Scott is the CEO and Co-Founder of BowTie.io, an internet tech company focused on providing the fastest, most innovative static hosting platform for developers. Prior to BowTie.io, Scott was VP of Strategy and Operations for @Pay, a mobile payment startup where he led the @Pay Product and Production teams, as well as provided direct leadership for all strategic initiatives. Before that he was Senior Operations and Strategy Manager for LivingSocial, where he was responsible for leadership of several operational and strategic teams, and a key driver of growth for one of the company’s fastest growing divisions. At Human Genome Sciences he ran finance throughout R&D prior to the company’s sale to GlaxoSmithKline. As a finance lead to the Emerging Markets Unit at Pfizer, Scott provided business development and financial efforts for nearly $400M in partnerships deals and international operations. Scott is a third generation entrepreneur, sits on the board of several companies, consults for clients around the country (both Fortune 500 and startups), and guest lectures on business strategy and innovation at universities and conferences.
Ph.D. Analytical Chemistry - University of Rhode Island
B.S. Chemistry - Washington State University
Dr. Shane Needham received his B.S. degree in chemistry from Washington State University and his Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Rhode Island. Dr. Needham is Laboratory Director of Alturas Analytics, Inc. Dr. Needham manages all scientific aspects of the HPLC/MS/MS bioanalytical contract laboratory at Alturas Analytics, Inc. Currently, Dr. Needham’s work is focused on the development and validation of assays for the determination of therapeutic agents and biomarkers from biological matrices. His laboratory has been a leader in the area of dried blood spot (DBS) analysis and microflow HPLC-MS/MS to support DMPK research.
Dr. Needham has over 100 publications and external presentations in the area of LC/MS. He has over 20 years of LC/MS and analytical lab experience in the drug discovery through drug development stage in the pharmaceutical industry. He previously worked for Pfizer in Groton, CT where he developed and validated GLP and non-GLP LC/MS/MS methods for the trace analysis of drugs and metabolites in biological fluids. He also performed in vivo and in vitro structure elucidation studies of drugs and metabolites using HPLC/MS/MS and HPLC/MSn instrumentation. Dr. Needham has LC/MS experience working with triple quadrupole, single quadrupole, ion trap, time-of-flight and quadrupole time-of-flight instrumentation. His area of academic research included the development of optimized stationary phases to improve the assay of pharmaceuticals by HPLC/MS.
Dr. Needham has been the chair and organizer of several workshops at national conferences. Dr. Needham also teaches LC/MS courses at international conferences including, Pittcon and AAPS conferences. Dr. Needham is also a reviewer for several peer reviewed journals including, Bioanalysis, Journal of Chromatography, Analytical Chemistry and Journal of Chromatographic Science. Dr. Needham also serves on the editorial board for the publication, American Pharmaceutical Review. Dr. Needham is a member of the American Chemical Society, American Society for Mass Spectrometry, American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists and the International Society of the Study of Xenobiotics.
