My projects are focused on key aspects of SSC identity and function both in vivo and in vitro. One of my projects focuses on the identification of subsets of the undifferentiated spermatogonia population based on expression levels of the transcriptional regulator ID4. Data from this project suggest that spermatogonia that express high levels of ID4 represent a pure SSC population while those that express lower levels are the direct progenitors. I am also interested in how long term culture of primary undifferentiated spermatogonia effects the number and regenerative integrity of the SSC population, which makes up a small subset of the cultured cells. Results from long term studies of cultures revealed a time-dependent decline in SSC number and regenerative integrity.
